A Student’s Perspective: Shadowing at Simpli Dental

In 2024, I began shadowing at Simpli Dental in Calgary as part of my journey to pursue a dental career. What began as a chance to gain clinical exposure, quickly became one of the most valuable learning experiences of my life. Before entering the clinic, my knowledge of dentistry was largely shaped by textbooks and my own experiences as a patient. Being behind the scenes offered a completely different viewpoint. I quickly realized how much planning, effort, and communication go into every appointment , which are details patients may not always see.

One of the most striking aspects of my experience was the attention placed on patient comfort. Whether it was a routine cleaning, an examination, or a restorative procedure, each patient was treated with patience and respect. Treatment options were explained clearly, questions were welcomed, and time was taken to make sure patients felt comfortable and knowledgeable. It became clear that dentistry is not just about technical skill , but it is about building trust and long term patient relationships.

During my time shadowing, I observed a variety of procedures that highlighted the importance of preventive care. Routine cleanings demonstrated how daily habits such as brushing and flossing have a big impact on oral health over the long term. I also saw restorative treatments that required careful planning and precision. Even procedures that may appear straightforward involve multiple detailed steps and a high level of focus. This balance between science and hands-on skill reinforced why I am drawn to this profession.

Another important lesson was understanding how common dental anxiety can be. Many patients arrive feeling anxious, and I witnessed the significant impact clear communication and reassurance can make. Explaining each step before beginning treatment and checking in throughout the procedure helps create a calmer, more comfortable environment. This experience strengthened my belief that empathy and effective communication are just as important as clinical expertise in healthcare.

Shadowing at Simpli Dental has further solidified my goal of pursuing a career in dentistry. It offered an insightful behind-the-scenes perspective on the dedication, attention to detail, and collaboration required to provide high-quality care. Most importantly, it reinforced that dentistry extends beyond procedures; it plays a meaningful role in improving both overall health and personal confidence.
